The Sewn Goods and Apparel Development Process

Learn how a sewn product moves from an idea through development and into manufacture.

How Projects Begin

Development projects do not always begin at the same step. Some projects begin with an idea or sketch, while others begin with existing patterns, samples, grading, or technical documentation already in progress. No matter what stage you’re at, most projects move through development in a sequence similar to the steps listed below.

Product Development Process

First, we translate your illustration, sketch, or concept into a working pattern while preserving your intended design. This pattern becomes the foundation for everything that follows.

Next, we use your pattern and chosen materials to build your design, evaluate fabric behavior, establish construction methods, and determine the equipment needed to make your product.

Your approved base pattern is then expanded into additional sizes while preserving the established design, allowing for testing, additional sampling, or small-batch production.

Finally, the information established through your pattern and sewn sample is documented, creating a clear technical reference for repeatable manufacturing.

As you move into manufacture, we provide ongoing guidance to help you understand factory requests, evaluate your options, and make decisions as questions arise.
