The Sewn Goods and Apparel Development Process
An overview of timelines, development steps, and project sequencing.
How Projects Begin
Development projects do not always begin at the same step. Some projects begin with an idea or sketch, while others begin with existing patterns, samples, grading, or technical documentation already in progress.
Projects are evaluated based on the current state of development and the work required before it is estimated.
Development Process
Most projects move through development in a sequence similar to the following steps:
STEP 0
STEP 1
STEP 2
STEP 3
STEP 4
STEP 5
Not every project starts at the same point, and some projects may move back and forth between steps as revisions are identified during development.
Estimates and Project Costs
Projects are estimated one step at a time rather than quoted as one large package upfront. This allows the project scope to adjust as development decisions become more defined throughout the process.
Development costs vary depending on product category, construction complexity, number of styles, materials and trims, grading requirements, revision rounds, and the amount of existing development work already completed.
As a general reference, many new brands spend between $8,000–$10,000 from development through initial manufacturing and inventory. Of that total, the average development cost through MADE for a single style ranges between $2,500 - $4,000, although complex designs can be more.
Project Timelines
Projects generally move forward one step at a time, allowing fit, construction, materials, sizing, and technical details to be reviewed before advancing further into development.
Each step takes approximately 1–2 weeks from intake to completion depending on product complexity, revision rounds, material sourcing requirements, approval timing, and the number of active styles in development.
As development progresses, future work, revisions, and timelines are evaluated based on the work still required to move forward.
